Stepfather patented a means of making sound decisions,
Imposed developmental innovations on her wayward mind.

The happy children up the street
Believed the house was spirit-plagued;
They said she walked around inside a cloud of ghosts;
They dropped their ice-creams when she came their way.
No one would play.

Grandfather rode in to defend the mind of his granddaughter.
He put her in the car and drove her to the west to convalesce.
Then he corrected the experiments that they'd done on her
through horseback riding, mountain climbing, bow and arrow,
self defense,

And on her sixteenth birthday,
gave her an aeroplane.
She flew across the great divide;
